On rare occasions, when conditions are just right, a vertical pillar of sunlight will shoot straight up from the horizon at the location where the sun set. This phenomena is called a sun pillar and is created by moisture and ice crystals of a specific size floating in the atmosphere. Date photographed August 26, 2011.
